Updated: Dec 8, 2020

About This Game Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meagre supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. The episodic story-mode for The Long Dark, WINTERMUTE, includes two of the five episodes that form its Season One. Both episodes were given a complete overhaul in December 2018, as part of the Redux Update: new mission structure, story beats, dialogue, animations etc.EPISODE ONE - “Do Not Go Gentle”Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.EPISODE TWO - “Luminance Fugue”Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted? The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Episodes Three to Five are included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free as they are released.Features performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three), and the music of Cris Velasco.Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative survival sandbox that has been honed over nearly three years in Early Access. The sale that is going on now (ends May 10) is a terrific buy. This game is incredibly immersive and has the continuing support of developers. A great buy at its list price, but on sale, it's a fantastic deal. I highly recommend it.. So far: pretty entertaining. Most of what I enjoy is the lonesome desolate feel of almost every location I've been to, massive props to the environment and setting. I like the storms and blizzards, the howling wind and also the dead quiet, the increased visibility of the Aurora Borealis because of the electro-magnetic event. I enjoy the feeling of finding a stash of supplies that I've desperately needed and also the frustration of find a "good spot" only to find out it is mostly empty. However, as much as i enjoy exploring the world that has been created in The Long Dark I have some criticisms regarding the realism that the creators are going for (see #3 for my biggest issue):1) Food weight\/ calories\/ calorie drain: 2 kg of wolf meat feeds you for most of a day when you're just staying warm inside, being restful. Rabbit meat does even less, and when completely empty of calories is takes over 5kg of rabbit to become full.Just to put that in perspective: 2kg = about 9 McDonalds Big Macs, 5 kg is approximately TWENTY THREE BIG MACS in weight.2) Clothing insulation: having grown up being outdoors-y in "The Canadian North" I feel like clothing does far less than it should in this game. I like the damp\/wet\/frozen aspect of clothing conditions and the fact that wind protection and waterproofness are included. But near the end of my first survival play-through I had finally found what I assume is the best clothing for dry-cold weather and going outside in -15 for an extended period is still a harrowing life\/death situation.Having comfortably gone hiking IRL in -40 conditions wearing essentially what I had in-game, I'm calling BS on clothing stats.3) What ended my first playthrough: Bulletproof Bear? Having equipped myself appropriately and getting used to the horrible iron sights, I decided to hunt down my local bear. Waited until the bear was facing away, took 1 shot behind the left shoulder (typically a kill shot IRL), followed that up with 3 headshots... aaaaaaaaaand I'm getting mauled to death :-\/I have a 30-30 Winchester in my family and through its years has killed 8 brown\/black bears (avg weight: 120 kg) and a grizzly (avg weight: 250 kg), we also have a .303 (which is essentially the same caliber, with higher velocity and heavier bullet) that while not having killed any bears, has taken down a moose (avg weight: 450 kg). I appreciate that the game is trying to be difficult and intense, but darn, that is a huge flaw in my opinion as far as realism goes. A glancing skull hit with a .303 would stun if not kill, three would leave the skull in pieces if they were soft-point rounds, if they were surplus FMJ they would continue through from head to hips piercing vitals along the way.. I couldn't find how to make a firecamp and died 7times in the easiest difficulty right at the begining of chapter1.10\/10 great game it told me that i'd die if i was outside of my room. The Long Dark is the gold standard by which every other survival game would aspire to be. The player navigates endlessly from quiet and calm isolation to moments of sheer terror and survival. The threat of death to cold, hunger, and wild animals is always in the back of your mind (and sometimes much closer). Yet even as your character struggles there is a peace about the game that brings players to grips with the one true enemy - yourself. One misstep could literally be the beginning of the end in a series of rapidly unfolding events but the reward of each successful step forward is a victory against the unrelenting cold, unending hunger, and thirst which seeks to deprive you of your sanity.Winning is not an achievement. Winning is simply surviving.. 8\/10 - The game is very immersive and realistic but I must address a few let downs:- You stun rabbits by throwing stones at them in a really unrealistic manner. The rabbit will literally only get poked by a stone yet it will still fall to the ground squealing, waiting for you to pick up.- You can't jump.- Story dialogue is VERY slow-paced, (2 second breaks in between every sentence).- You can't drive vehicles.- The fire system can be a joke: it's a very very very cool concept (fires don't always light, you have to select a fuel, a fire source (matches, a flare, etc) and tinder to get the fire going. Newspaper burns incredibly easily in real life, yet in game you can still fail to create a fire when using newspaper. It is literally the easiest thing to create a fire using newspaper).- There aren't all that many wildlife threats. [Spoiler warning ahead] There are wolves and bears and moose, wolves and bears are very aggressive but moose will only defend themselves when provoked.- There is a small loading screen before you're able to enter a building.- The story mode is very repetitive, everything you need is strategically placed which breaks immersia. There is very little "effort", at least in episode 1 from what I can see so far. It's just to and from, harvest wood, get food, check out a bus crash, go to a farm, etc. The survival is where the fun really lies.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Cool features:- You can get in cars, (can't drive them, as stated above) and search the two visors, the glove box, the trunk and the hood for loot.- Performing certain activities requires you to spend a certain amount of in game time and in game calories. For example, cutting up a big chunk of wood would take you about 20 minutes real time and would spend a small amount of calories and energy.- Weather systems and temperature systems are very good looking and are suited to make you lose temperature faster in storms. Different clothes give you different cold insulation.- I really enjoy the searching mechanic. You have to click and hold to search through objects to find loot and there is a LOT of things to search. Glove boxes, storage containers, crates, wardrobes, bedside tables, tool boxes and more.- The wildlife attack system is fantastic! There is a small slow motion break when you get attacked by an animal, allowing you to choose what you want to use to defend yourself. If you chose a small knife, you will stab the enemy multiple times before it backs off, whereas other weapons like axes hit a lot slower due to the weight. If you chose a revolver to defend yourself, you will hit the enemy 4-5 times with the handle end of the gun before being prompted to "Take Shot" and scare off the animal.- You can choose how long you want to sleep.- If you're waiting for food to cook, you can left click and will be prompted to "pass time until ready", which essentially speeds up time until the food is cooked.- You can find books on your adventures and read them to gain skills in various things.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It's a very great exploration adventure survival game set in harsh snow conditions. I love it and I recommend it.. Very good. Its just a big shame that VR support dropped off their radar when it was mooted in early on. I get it - hand support would take a lot of effort, but I still wish you'd do a VR release without hand support like Subnautica and the Alien Isolation mod. The Long Dark is such a beautiful immersive experience that it would be something truely stunning in VR.. I will say if you wanted a hardcore survival game this is it, where you won't have time to look around or your dead if you try to look for things or anything that won't help you survive in this frozen hell. But that my problem with it is that I'd like to look around and find some things to see if there's story or anything that can help but there's no time to look. It's like fire on your skin if you don't put it out now your dead but you don't have a lot things that can put it out beside a oil rag and there's no water, no nothing that can help plus the fire is now reaching your head and the pain is getting worse then you die. That's what this game is all about. So again not bad, it's great for brutal survival but if your here for Open world survival and taking your time. That's not here.. Very good gameBut when will episode 3 release?. Best Canada simulator I've ever played.9\/10 Would go into shock again.
